Training: Social and Behaviour Change (SBC) Academy

In 2024, IOM began running the SBC Academy - a 4-day in-person journey of informative presentations, group exercises, and discussions with IOM staff and partners to understand the importance of behavioural science in creating positive waves of change at the community level.
Now we’re taking the SBC Academy online with a downloadable training package so more people can get an introduction to SBC and learn about IOM’s approach to community engagement.
Adapted from the in-person training sessions facilitated by MAGENTA and IOM, this training aims to enhance understanding and application of SBC principles, providing participants with the necessary tools to implement initiatives in their communities.

The SBC Academy consists of four modules, each focusing on critical aspects of social and behaviour change:
- Module 1

Module 1 is a general introduction to SBC. This foundational module introduces the key concepts of SBC, differentiating it from traditional approaches. Participants will be introduced to behavioural research, audience segmentation, and the different types of SBC models and how to integrate them into various stages of project development.
- Module 2

Module 2 emphasises practical applications. Key topics include designing an SBC Theory of Change, developing key messages and nudges, and selecting the right SBC interventions. Participants will also learn implementation techniques and how to monitor and evaluate their SBC initiatives.
- Module 3

Module 3 focuses on participatory techniques that empower communities. Participants will learn proven strategies for effective community involvement, skills for facilitating community conversations with empathy, and tools for enhancing collaboration and co-creating solutions.
- Module 4

Module 4 equips participants with practical tools to design and communicate impactful SBC initiatives. Participants will learn how to engage volunteers, strengthen community connections, and create an effective elevator pitch and creative brief.
